I’ve had a very positive experience with this facility. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and genuinely seem to care about the people they serve. The building has a warm atmosphere, and it’s clear that a lot of effort goes into making residents feel comfortable and cared for. What stands out most is the compassion and dedication of the team. Questions and concerns are taken seriously, and the staff work hard to make sure residents and families feel supported. I would definitely recommend this facility to anyone looking for a caring and supportive place for a loved one.
The reason I give Porthaven three stars instead of one star, is that the therapy staff are truly outstanding. But I agree that Porthaven is understaffed. One of the CNAs agreed that they’re understaffed and told me that the patient to staff ratio is set by the Oregon Board of Nursing. I researched this, and found out that the ratio of the Board of Nursing is for minimum safety requrirements, and that a facility is free to hire more staff. I agree with the reviewer who talked about the varioius CNAs, some of whom are wonderful, seem to love their jobs, and go out of their way to be helpful and kind; while other are impatient and /or rude. CNAs in Oregon have four to eight weeks of training. CNAs are the basic care givers at Porthaven. It’s hard to connect with the minimally staffed nurses. Porthaven caused me to have a bedsore. They did not tell me it was a bedsore, and that this can be a serious condition. And the treatment they used was not the right treatment. At Providence Portland Medical Center, the doctor said the wound need so stay dry, and not to us wound care ointment. When my brother broke his neck, he tells me, he “lay flat on [his] back for 9 months.” He did not get bed sores. The hospital he was in had him resting and a sheepskin. They may have had other ways to prevent bedsores, but Porthaven did not. I tried to telephone Brandon, the Administrator about this, but there was no way to leave a message for him. Also, the release person promised me — more than once, because I checked with her — that a Home Health nurse would be scheduled for my home when I got home. It’s been about two weeks since I got home, and no nurse. It’s taken a lot of time for my medical representative to find a nurse for me. I pay her for her time helping me, and this is something Porthaven should have handled in the first place.
Attentive caring staff. Good meals, good PT department, and management seems involved in care. Marcie is great, she took me down the street to get a haircut and a beard trim, that was above and beyond what I expected.
